The sham with yams is almost upon us friends. Well, in about 24 days. But oh, how the time flies! In preparation for Thanksgiving, I thought we could all come together and do something cool.
It’s no secret that BTVS has had a strong impact on many people’s lives. It’s one of those shows that transcends the medium and ingrains itself into our hearts. I’ve seen many stories around the internet documenting life struggles that fans have gone through, and how the show has helped them through dark times.
Now, many people who aren’t part of a fandom, or even a fan of anything in general (they exist, believe me) will say things like, “it’s just a TV show”, or “why are you so obsessed with it? It’s not even real.” But that’s just the thing. While the characters and the universes they inhabit may not be real, the issues they face and the metaphorical devils they conquer very well are. And if someone finds comfort in relating to these battles, then more power to them. If you live in circumstances where you don’t have anyone to turn to, or any place to run to, and you find a television show that allows you to escape, however momentarily, then the writers, actors, and everyone involved with a program have done their job.
Personally, the show has shown me that there is no limit to the differences you can make in the world, even if you don’t have superpowers. It’s a show that promotes inspiring messages of individuality, personal growth, and power in all forms, and I will forever be grateful for the positive, uplifting influence it’s characters and stories have had on me. There are some days that I feel overwhelmed, like I can’t escape the dark cloud constantly raining down on me. Whether it be finances, work, relationships, or a combination of the three, sometimes I just don’t want to leave my bed in the morning. But then, I remember the words that give me the courage and resolve to keep on fighting: “The hardest thing in this world… is to live in it. Be brave. Live.” Sometimes it’s “Make your choice. Are you ready to be strong?” There’s just something in those words…such conviction and inspiration that makes me get up and set out to do something…be someone. And I get up to take on another day. I am thankful for Buffy because it gives me strength.
Buffy Summers isn’t real but everything that she stands for is. So let’s celebrate this amazing show and share with each other why we are thankful for Buffy.
All you need to do is give me 1-2 short sentences on why you are thankful for the show, along with your favorite character. I’ll be accepting submissions right up until the holiday, and then I will be posting something special with the collective entries!
